Wish You Were Here…
Postcards / Photos of West Africa
This collection of postcards, photos, and other materials from West Africa, provide some context for the “Wish You Were…” exhibition. One can get a sense of some of the forces that are building and shaping the spaces and peoples discussed herein. The postcards contained in this collection are far more explicit about their purpose. On the back of many of the postcards there are printed exhortations asking for European language teachers, physicians, ministers, single women, working men, etc to be sent to the missions. This partially explains the raising of the spaces to come. As the missions operating throughout West Africa made inroads in their missionary work, they required more and more colonialists to help cement the gains they were making. Thus, the rise in the building of churches and works supported by them effected the creation of more and more Christian sacred spaces.
And with that, the exhibition embarks…
