Description

Triodion (Postnaya Triod, Pisna Triod, Lenten Triodion) - one of a set of choir books originally produced by the Studites, but Philotheos, patriarch of Constantinople (1354-1355 and 1361-1375), insisted on the inclusion of an Office for St. Gregory Palamas, archibishop of Thessalonica and a vigorous opponent of Catholicism, whose commemoration is kept by the Orthodox on the second Sunday of Lent. The book contains the variable parts of the services from the tenth Sunday before Easter (the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee) until Holy Saturday, after which the Pentekostarion follows. The name derives from there being three odes in the Canon instead of the customary nine. (Day, Peter. The Liturgical Dictionary of Eastern Christianity. Wellwood, 1993. P. 292). The book forms part of the the collection of old prints and special collections of UCU Library. The book contains marginal notes in black ink. The binding is new (cardboard base and leather).
