The monthly business meeting is the basic unit of Quaker organization. In the 17th and 18th centuries, only members in good standing could participate. Men and women met separately to conduct business but worshipped together. It had responsibility for care of members, authorizing marriages and removals (transfers), and maintaining discipline.
