Scribe I: with a red title and initials, Scribe I writes in a casual but legible hand with few ligatures. The hand is slightly squarish and slants to the right. There are few enlarged letters and a mixture of uncial and minuscules. It appears that the scribe used a quill of medium width. Scribe II: most of the manuscript was written by Scribe II. He writes a rather large formal open hand with abbreviations using superposition and compression primarily within the rubrics. The hand is uniformly broad and expansive, with some letters larger than others, and it is written with a reed pen with a largish soft nib. Scribe III: follows in much the same tradition of letter formation as that of Scribe II and with a slightly lighter brown ink for the text and a vivid red for the rubrics and the margin initials. However, his hand tends to be squarish and was likely written by a quill as can be seen by the variations between the thicks and thins. Scribe IV: writes a very scratchy, hasty, crabbed hand in a dark brown to black ink. It is highly abbreviated, slants to the right in the direction of the text. Scribe V: writes in a hand that has a slightly backward slant, is squarish, and the ink is purplish black. It appears to have been written by a hand that is more familiar with the roman alphabet than with the Greek, especially the uncial characters. Scribe VI: writes a hand very similar to that of Scribe IV. The hand is typical of that of an informal style and clearly comes from the early part of the sixteenth-century. Scribe VII: is very similar to that of Scribe IV, but with a strong rightward slant, in a strong black ink, hastily written. Almost certainly from the sixteenth- or early part of the seventeenth-century.;Decoration: Initials in red throughout; the larger ones have formal floral decoration or elaborate interlacing (fol. 8v, 12r, 16v, 17v, 20r, 22v, 23r, 26v, 30v, 33r, 36r, 37v--bird figure--41r, 45v, 49r, 53r--bar headpiece--54v, 64v and 76v). One includes the motifs of a bird (fol. 37v) with its neck wrapped around by a column to form the letter "K, " and on fol. 53r a bar headpiece.;Origin: Southern Italy.;Title cataloged from existing description.;Binding: Bound in dark brown blind-stamped morocco by Gozzi in Modena in 1970, sewn on four raised double cords. The binder's small identification stamp is in gild on the turn-in at the tail of the upper cover. The cover decoration is a wide frame with corner diagonals ruled in double fillets; along the inside of the lines forming the frame are a series of very small double annules. The central panel has a mascle with a rectilinear network divided into a pattern of diamons of 25 regular sections each centered with a small double outlined mascle with slightly concave sides. The doublures are of parchment and stamped on both the doublures inside the upper and lower covers in the gilt exlibris of "Torre del Palasciano, " an ovoid finely engraved leafmask with cresting elements; azured background of parallel lines.

The paper leaves come from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century and are written in black ink. It is likely that the same ink appears in the overwriting and reinking done throughout the manuscript. However, the rest of the manuscript is the work of Clement. The hand of Clement is in an open, legible, very regular round flowing cursive, pendant, vertical with a slightly leftward slant, formed with a broad nib using a dark brown ink. The same ink is used for the initial letters which are both outline and solid, floriated and knotted; however, at the beginnings of the readings, the initial letters are delicately formed, turned, floriated, but not knotted, using a variety of colors--reds, greens, blues, with white highlights. There is a disproportionate number of minuscule forms. There are gilt and/or red semi-uncials in the titles.;Decoration: Some time during its history, many of the headpieces were cut out, as were several initial letters. Those that remain are quite unusual both in composition and the use of colors. The one headpiece that remains on fol. 158r has the appearance of an expanded floriate and foliate pattern in Frantz, Pl xiii.20 but enclosed within a border as in Pl.xiii.9, p. 60 and 72. The colors are dark and strong with a gilt background and black used for one of the running rinceau patterns. The colored initials are quite delicate and small, similar to those in Oxford, Christ Church, Ms. Wake (A. D. 1068).;Title cataloged from existing description.;Evangelion arranged in the order of the church year with lections for the weekdays after the morrow of Pentecost, until Holy Week; lacks leaves beginning and after leaves 6, 94, 100, 130, and 218; also lacking 8 leaves, which have all been replaced on paper in a fourteenth century hand.;Binding: Modern binding of reused parchment with a central stamped panel over wooden boards with tan pigskin backstrip; modern fore edge brass clasps and catches. The binding was done by Victor A. Brown, Tonbridge, at the turn of the year 1947-1948. According to correspondence with Mr. Munby, Victor Brown had received the manuscript disbound and constructed the present binding after conversation with Mr. Munby.

Written in a deep brown ink, the minuscule is remarkably open and widely spaced, as is evident from the ruling with 12 mm between the lines. The letters are carefully formed, mostly vertical, rounded, and pendant, and none is enlarged or extends above the line of text except those letters which have ascenders and descenders. As a liturgical text, the words are occasionally separated by the ecphonetic notations which have been added in the line of text and above in a soft red.;Decoration: Throughout the scribe follows a very similar pattern of constructing initial letters: the large initials are mostly outlined in gold with the interior void; there are several colored initials (fol. 1r, 48r, 79r, 111r, 154r, and 197r) and many in red. The image of the letter "T" growing out of the partridge breast is reminiscent of Moscow, Historical Museum, Cod. VI, 382 where the letter "A" is similarly presented. The ornamental headpieces are of several types: the introductory headpiece (fol. 1r) follows a carpet motif whereas those for the beginning of the major sections have been created in a style of the rectangular headpiece of the 11th/12th century (fol. 1r, 48r, 79r, 111r, 154r, and 197r). For the divisions in the menologion, the divisions are marked by a simple, slender (3 mm) gilt bar, except for one that is a running ornament (fol. 269r) and a slender gilt turned ornament (fol. 275v);Music: Contains ecphonetic notation.;Title cataloged from existing description.;Binding: Covers of thin wooden boards (8 mm thick), beveled on the inside and covered with a dark brown morocco. Around the edge of the board a frame has been formed by a small roll (4mm) with a running pattern composed of vine and fruit, bordered on either side in blind by three fillets, one wider than the other two. Within the frame a lozenge has been created of the same combination of tools converging at the inside edge of the frame at the center of each side. Within each of the four corners a lozenge stamp filled with a blossom and leaves (23 x 18 mm) has been affixed; the same stamp with points touching are arranged vertically. The two fore edge clasps are wanting. They were apprarently made of fabric and may actually have been ties anchored under the cover by two nails since there are no distinctions between the attachments of the upper and lower covers. The manuscript has been rebacked sometime in its recent history, likely within the twentieth-century. Decorated endsheets are of a widely spaced leaf patterns in light green, reddish tan and black against a pink background. At one time the edges of the textblock were gilt.

Bound with chain-link sewing in 5 stations, with extended end bands intact on boards (now wanting at tail). Tabby linen liner extends halfway across board. Originally clasped as head and tail with a single clasp and two clasps on the fore edge by interlaced band with ties anchored from the outside. The text block has been cut even with the boards. Both covers contain similar decoration, now scuffed and faded. The decoration consists of three frames of triple fillets, with rectangular stamp at each corner, enclosing a center panel. The center panel has large triangular stamps at the head and tail, counterpoised, with three circular fleur-de-lis designs at the apex of each. The remaining space is filled with annular stamps. Bosses at each corner and one at the center are wanting.

He uses a wide nib which produces contrasting thick and thin lines as may be seen in the transverse strokes of the uncial kappa, lambda, chi, and alpha. Although the hand tends to be upright, there is a perceptible slant to the right. The titles, chapters and canon numbers are all written in semi-uncials, slightly largers than the letters of the text. The titles are frequently highlighted with a yellow wash. The scribe frequently fills in the outlines of a letter with deep red ink. Scribe II commences without loss of text at fol. 78r in the middle of a lesson for Palm Sunday.;Decoration: The titles and headings are highlighted in yellow. Some of the capitals are touched in red; there are more than 190 decorated initials of two main styles according to the taste of the scribes: 1) penwork ornament with foliate ornaments and knotted stems, pointing hands frequently infilled with red and sometimes yellow, and 2) simpler designs in red usually without the penwork outlines. There are headpieces which stretch across the full width of the column: fol. 1r, 117v, 123r, 127v, 133r, 138v, 140v, 142v, 143v (marginal foliate ornaments), 146v, 147v, and 150r. Some decorated initials are copied out again in margins in medieval hands and a standing figure holding a cross was added in margin on fol. 110v.;Title cataloged from existing description.;Gospel lectionary with readings for Sundays and for weekdays between Easter and Pentecost; part of flyleaf was replaced with another manuscript apparently an eleventh- or twelfth- century commentary on Genesis.
