Description
  • Lithograph of John Gill. 1881. John Gill was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England, on November 23, 1697. His father, Edward Gill helped form a Particular Baptist church and served as a deacon. As a child John Gill was an excellent student and learned several languages. He was baptized on November 1, 1716, and began to preach. On March 22, 1720, he was ordained pastor of the church at Horsleydown, Southwark, London. Early in his life, he began to collect Hebrew works, such as the Talmuds and Targums. This led to his prominence as a scholar of Old Testament and Jewish antiquities. In 1748 he received his Doctor of Divinity from Aberdeen. Gill published many works, most notably his Body of Divinity in 1769 and his Annotations on the Bible, a commentary on the Old and New Testaments. He died on October 14, 1771. JPG file (333 KB)
