Photograph of George W. Truett. 1923. George W. Truett was born in North Carolina on May 6, 1867. At 18 he began teaching at the local schools. When he was 22, he left for Texas. There he worked to free Baylor University from debt. While in school there, he accepted the pastorate at East Waco Baptist Church. When Truett graduated from Baylor University in 1897, he was appointed pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas. Shortly after beginning this pastorate, he was also elected to be president of Baylor University; however, he refused to give up his pastorate. He made several trips abroad, preaching to soldiers in France in 1918 and serving as a messenger and preacher at the Baptist World Alliance conventions. Truett died on July 7, 1944.
