Description
  • Gilbert Tennent (1703-1764) was an Irish-American Presbyterian clergyman, and one of the leaders of the Great Awakening. Tennent wrote this sermon to be delivered before the holy meal, in warning against sin. He begins by citing Romans 7:13, "Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful." He also cites Jeremiah 44:4, "Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate." From dates noted in the manuscript, it looks like Tennent wrote this sermon in 1745, then delivered it again in 1748.
