Ten martyrs (six men and four women) are chained to five separate stakes. All of the martyrs are fully clothed and are engulfed by large flames. Three men and two women have their hands clasped in prayer. A crowd of soldiers observes the burning; two soldiers at the far left of the image are on horseback. A soldier at the forefront of the image tends the fire and adds a faggot to the burning pyre. Another man, at the bottom right of the image, does not appear to be a soldier but is perhaps a citizen sympathetic to the martyrs. This man appears to be pleading with the soldier tending the fire. Revised version of Luborsky and Ingram 11223/97, which appears only once in the second (1570), third (1576), and fourth (1583) early English editions. This illustration includes ten martyrs while the earlier woodcuts only illustrate six. Additionally, the earlier woodcuts do not include a crowd of soldiers. JPEG file (427 KB).
