Description
  • In 2020, Judith Rock is a well-known novelist, writing mysteries based on the Jesuit world of 17th century France (see Charles du Luc mysteries, www.judithrock.com). She discovered this period while writing a paper on “The Carol in the Context of Christian Liturgical Dance.” In Margaret Taylor’s A Time to Dance, she found a reference to ecclesiastical dances used to celebrate special occasions in 17th century France. One remark indicated a “ballet.” Further research led to her dissertation, Terpsichore at Louis Le Grand : baroque dance on a Jesuit stage in Paris (1988), which became a book in 1996. Her academic background includes a BA in Religion, Duke University; MDiv, San Francisco Theological Seminary; MA in Dance, Mills College; and a PhD in Theology and Art, Graduate Theological Union. She has taught at Pacific School of Religion and St. Olaf College. While in the Bay Area, she co-founded Body and Soul Dance Company. She danced until pain eased her off the stage. During the 1990’s, she worked as a full-time and auxiliary police officer. Along with her writings on 17th century France, she has written numerous articles on theology and dance. With Norman Mealy, she wrote "Performer as Priest and Prophet : Restoring the Intuitive in Worship through Music and Dance" (1986).
