Description
  • Lawton covers the confessions of Jeremiah in chapters 11-20. Bitterness in response to the mysteries of life is a common occurrence amongst believer and non-believer alike. Lawton focuses on the poem from Jeremiah 12:1-5. God has always been seen to be innocent and just. God's sovereign character has been reflected in His justice. Looking over the past, Jeremiah concludes that at no point did God not display His true nature. All holiness begins with a reflection of God and His character. True prayer emerges from a knowledge of the nature of God. Whatever question Jeremiah asks and faces, he is grounded in the unchangeable character and nature of God. Jeremiah's complaint involves a question concerning the apparent success and prosperity of those who are wicked and evil. For Jeremiah, danger was present from the men of Anathoth, the very people to whom Jeremiah was sent. Men who had the name of God on their lips, and yet their hearts were far from God. Jeremiah's cry for justice brings us face-to-face with the righteousness of God. God's judgement is revealed through His word which calls the world to account. God sees all of man's life and His judgement stands over every part of life. All too often, we seek to tackle the large issues present rather than focusing on the little aspects of day-to-day life. God deals with us firstly in the small things in life so that we are equipped to deal with the larger things in life.
