Description
  • The Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church is the seat of the oldest archbishopric in the U. S. The foundation was laid in 1806; the British invasion during the War of 1812 caused a suspension on the work for several years but the structure was completed in 1821. It is 190 feet long by 197 feet wide and here are buried the various archbishops of this jurisdiction. Here also Cardinal Gibbons received his dignities.
