  • Photograph of Joseph Martin Dawson. 1917. Joseph Martin Dawson was born in Ellis County, Texas, on June 21, 1879. He received his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University. In 1900 he was ordained in the First Baptist Church of Waco, and soon began serving as pastor of churches. He founded and edited the Southwestern Theological Review, which later merged into the Review and Expositor. In 1905 he became pastor of the Baptist church in Lampasas. Dawson also served as editor of the Baptist Standard for a year beginning in 1907. After serving as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Hillsboro starting in 1908 and the First Baptist Church in Temple starting in 1912, Dawson settled into the pastorate of the First Baptist Church in Waco, where he had received his ordination some time earlier.
