  • Lithograph of Albert Henry Newman. 1881. Albert Henry Newman was born in Edgefield, South Carolina, on August 25, 1852. He was baptized in 1868 and entered Mercer University the next year. In 1872 he entered Rochester Theological Seminary. Newman also spent a year at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, beginning in 1875. After serving as a church history professor at Rochester Theological Seminary for some time, in 1880 he became the “Pettengill Professor of Church History.” He also worked for a time in the Toronto Theological Seminary.
