Photograph of Amzi Clarence Dixon. 1923. On July 6, 1854 Amzi Clarence Dixon was born in Shelby, North Carolina. He graduated from Wake Forest College at the age of nineteen. During his senior year there he was called to preach. He pastored two country churches before entering Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After seven months he was forced to return home due to his mother's illness, and he preached in the village church. When the time came to return to the Seminary, he instead accepted the call to the pastorate of the Baptist Church at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. There he remained for three years, when he was called to Asheville. After another three years he was called to Baltimore, Maryland. From there he accepted the call of the Hanson Place Baptist church of Brooklyn, New York, where he remained ten years. At that time he was called to the Ruggles Street Baptist Church in Boston, remaining there five years. He was then called to the Moody Church in Chicago for five years before moving on to the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. There he remained for eight years, until WWI was over. At that time he began lecturing at the Los Angeles Baptist Institute and traveling the world, activities that lasted three years until his next call. This call was to the University Baptist Church at Baltimore. He died on June 14, 1925. JPG file (200 KB)
