Photograph of James Milton Carroll. 1923. James Milton Carroll was born in Monticello, Arkansas, on January 8, 1852. In 1858 he moved to Texas with his parents. He began attending Baylor University in 1873. After graduation he became pastor of churches at Anderson and Oakland. During this time he also served as Corresponding Secretary of the Sunday School Convention of Texas. He served in Corpus Christi for three years as a missionary pastor. He pastored churches throughout Texas and raised funds for countless boards. In 1892 he became corresponding Secretary for the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Later he was elected pastor of the First Baptist church of Waco, a position he resigned from in order to work on the Baylor University endowment. In 1913 he became president-elect of Howard Payne College. Ten years later he published A History of Texas Baptists, a culmination of over 40 years of research. (page 45 of Baptist Biography, vol 2.)
