Dirick Carver stands fully clothed and tied to a stake by a chain around his waist. His arms are extended and he has an expression of despair on his face. He is surrounded by a crowd of soldiers; two soldiers in the foreground of the image tend the fire that engulfs Dirick and creates a large dark cloud of smoke above his head. In earlier editions this martyrdom is illustrated by Luborsky and Ingram 11223/19, which appears in each of the second (1570), third (1576), and fourth (1583) early English editions. This, however, is a completely new design, although it has similar features to "The martyrdom of Kerby." JPEG file (457 KB).
