"MD" (see "Soldiers drag two Christians by ropes" in this collection).
Guards flog a group of partially clothed and naked men and women, some of whom wear crowns of thorns. These soldiers drive the martyrs up a slope and around a tree trunk. They then force the martyrs over the edge of the summit. The victims fall onto sharp pikes and are impaled. A town is visible in the distance. The design of the illustration is based on Albrecht Dürer's Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand (c.1496). (Cartouche: "Christia[n]s driue[n] up the mou[n]taines.34.79." ["Christians driven up the mountains. 34. 79."]); ("The Christians cruelly are throwen downethe mountaines. 34." ["The Christians cruelly are thrown down the mountains. 34."]); ("And so falling downe upon sharpe stakis." ["And so falling down upon sharp stakes."]). This woodcut appears on the "Table of the Ten First Persecutions of the Primitive Church" foldout illustration in the second (1570) and fourth (1583) editions. Luborsky and Ingram 11223/1A (detail).
