• Nina Miglionico graduated from Howard College in 1933 before pursuing a law degree from The University of Alabama. In 1963, Miglionico became the first female voted onto the Birmingham City Council, where she affectionately became known as Miss Nina. In 2015, the city of Birmingham honored Miss Nina for her many contributions to the city with a statue in Lynn Park. In the photograph the slogan behind Miss Nina originally said, “Cities are what men make of them.” She suggested the sign be changed in order to be more inclusive. But she was told such a change would be too expensive. Miss Nina then suggested the city could remove the N from “men” and turn the M upside down in order to serve as a W, reading "Cities are what We make of them." After the correction was made, the city presented Miss Nina with the extra N.
