The Apostle Paul sits at a desk, sword in his lap, and a woman (Phoebe) stands before him. From the Dietenberger Bible, the German trans-lation issued by Johann Dietenberger (d. 1534) as a Roman Catholic Response to Luther’s translation of the Scriptures, also issued in 1534. This woodcut is prompted by the reference in Paul’s letter to the Romans, where he commends to the Roman church Phoebe, “a servant (or deaconess) of the church in Cenchrea” (16:1). Here Paul is an old man and is seated at a writing desk as Phoebe stands before him, perhaps handing him a book. At his side is a sword, the means of his execution according to Christian tradition, and on the wall behind him are leaves of paper.
