Goldsworthy preaches on Proverbs 8:22–28 on the topic of wisdom and creation. As residents of a broken world, it is difficult to come to terms with creation’s condition. The secular mind sees no link between the general condition of mankind and the world’s condition. A wise approach to the world is only found in a right understanding of God. Proverbs contains a continued call to accept instruction and to listen diligently to wise teaching. The fear of God is repeatedly described as the beginning of all wisdom. Wisdom personified extols the benefits and credentials of Wisdom. Wisdom is at work both in down-to-earth contexts and in the context of kings. Wisdom personified describes its origin in God before the creation of the earth. The use of a personified “Wisdom” is a poetic metaphor to present to the reader God’s pre-eminent role in all actions and His central role as Creator. Empirical wisdom is not merely a naturalistic pursuit; it involves the interpretation of our human experience in light of the fact that the source of all true knowledge is God. Wisdom attended creation and acted as the attendant of God throughout the process. Wisdom is not derived from nature. To understand the world, we must firstly understand the wisdom which established the world. Wisdom is God’s agent in creation and the principle of His grand design. The credential of Wisdom personified invites readers to learn from it. Folly personified is credited with actions that lead to death. Five aspects of the significance of the passage in its context. Firstly, Proverbs 8:22–28 is sandwiched between practical instructions. It is a way of showing that the wisdom of the home and classroom of the sage both originate with the wisdom of God. By asserting that all true wisdom comes from God, the passage removes the possibility that wisdom comes from empirical observation. The only basis for a life-giving wisdom is to start with an understanding of the Lord. Thirdly, the summons of Wisdom personified merges with the call of the wisdom teacher, underlying the fact that the wisdom, which is the gift of God, is mediated by the wise teacher to those who have an attentive heart. Fourthly, Proverbs 8 does not describe a divine Wisdom. In light of the New Testament, the ultimate expression and embodiment of wisdom is Christ. Fifthly, the call of the Wise Man, who is the source of wisdom and divine wisdom, is Jesus.
