Description
  • Webb explores the topic of God’s role as judge. Throughout world history, God’s role as judge can be clearly determined. God is seen as judge in major events including the Tower of Babel and in the Exodus. Beyond large, significant events, God’s judgement can be seen in individual instances such as with Hannah in 1 Samuel. For the Psalmist, the past acts of God are meditated upon throughout this passage. God’s movement and action throughout history can be characterised as purposeful and intentional. Ultimately, God is moving history towards a definitive end, the reign and glorification of Jesus. For the ancient Israelite, a reflection upon the control and sovereignty of God throughout history served to secure them against a backdrop of major political powers who surrounded the nation. From this meditation, they were equipped with a certainty and security to carry out their purpose as witnesses to the world. For the Christian, the sovereign Lord comforts us throughout our daily struggles and triumphs. Like the Israelites, we too can take security and comforting in the knowledge that God is ultimately control of our lives.
