  • Photograph of John William Porter. 1920. John William Porter was born on August 8, 1863 in Fayette County, Tennessee. He was educated under private tutors to prepare him for the University of Mississippi. After graduating from the University of Mississippi, Porter attended the Lebanon Law College in Tennessee. In 1889 he was converted and baptized. The next year he was ordained and began pastoring area churches. When Porter began attending the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he continued pastoring area churches. He was pastor of the church at Pewee Valley and LaGrange, Kentucky, from 1894-1898. In 1908 he became the pastor of the First Baptist Church at Lexington, Kentucky. He died on September 7, 1937. JPG file (166 KB)
