Gilbert Tennent (1703-1764) was an Irish-American Presbyterian clergyman, and one of the leaders of the Great Awakening. This manuscript contains two sermons by Tennent. The title of the first sermon is illegible, but it is on the subject of ministers as spiritual builders. Tennent begins by this sermon by citing Matthew 21:42, "Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes’?" He also cites Ephesians 2:20-21, "And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord." Tennent begins the second sermon, "On Christ as a servant of God," by citing Zechariah 3:8, "Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the Branch. He also cites Matthew 20:2-8, "For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard..."
