Lithograph of John Gano. 1881. John Gano was born in Hopewell, New Jersey on July 22, 1727. His father was Presbyterian, but Gano joined the Baptists as a result of his beliefs on baptism. He was ordained on May 29, 1754 and served for two years as the pastor of the Scotch Plains church. In 1762, Gano became the founding pastor of the First Baptist Church of New York. During the Revolutionary War he served as an army chaplain, receiving great recognition for his bravery. Washington is reported to have said: "Baptist chaplains were the most prominent and useful in the army." He returned to New York after the war and revived the church there.
