Lithograph of John Nelson Murdock. 1881. John Nelson Murdock was born in Oswego, New York on December 8, 1820. At the age of 17 he was converted; a short time later he was licensed to preach by the Methodist church. In 1842 he was immersed in baptism and received Baptist ordination shortly thereafter. Murdock accepted the pastorate at the church in Albion, New York, where he remained until he accepted the pastorate at the South Church in Hartford two years later. In 1854 Murdock received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Rochester University. He remained in Hartford until 1857, when he accepted the pastorate of the Bowdoin Square church in Boston. In 1863 he was elected secretary of the Missionary Union. He died in 1897. JPG file (339 KB)
