Lithograph of Edwin Theodore Winkler. 1881. On November 13, 1823, Edwin Theodore Winkler was born in Savannah, Georgia. After preparing at the local academy, he attended Brown University, from which he graduated in 1843. After graduation, he attended Newton Theological Seminary. In 1845 Winkler served as assistant editor of the Christian Index. After a year he became pastor of the church in Albany, Georgia. In 1852 Winkler began serving as the corresponding secretary of the Southern Baptist Publication Society. After two years he felt called to the First Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina. He served as a chaplain in the Confederate Army, after which he returned to his church in Charleston. In 1872 he became pastor in the city of Marion, Alabama. After two years he was invited to become the editor-in-chief of the newly formed Alabama Baptist. Winkler died on November 10, 1883. JPG file (344 KB)
