Description
  • Peter speaks on the topic of the good life based on 1 Peter 3:8-17. The biblical view of the good life is yet to come, realized with the return of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom. Christians have secured their place in this future good life through Christ’s work. Believers are shaped and guided by the hope of this promise, which brings joy and blessing in the present. The good life is found in God’s kingdom and in doing His will. The underlying theme of the letter is inward hope, explored in how it is expressed within Christian community and toward non-believers. Quoting Psalm 34, Peter applies the passage from the perspective of eternal life. Five characteristics of the hope-shaped Christian life include unity of thought, compassion, love for others, tender-heartedness, and humility. In relation to outsiders, believers are to respond not with retaliation but with blessing. When the Christian hope is set on the future, it transforms present attitudes and behavior. Observing this hope, others may be prompted to inquire about the believer’s faith and motivations. Believers must be prepared to provide an explanation to outsiders concerning their faith.
