Vinay preaches on mission and the gospel based on John 15-17. To witness to the world involves public proclamation. Vinay argues that we must recognise the cultural foreground and background contexts in which one ministers and proclaims the gospel. Three things that can't be taken for granted anymore include the text, the self, and social institutions. Universal loss of trust in meaning and truth leads to a breakdown of reliance upon the importance and significance of text. The text is necessary for the self. The self requires a framework to understand itself and find meaning. The text gives the framework and is therefore significant to provide meaning and significance to the self. Through the text, God meets and gives identity and substance to people. Without the Bible, we lose the most important truths about self and society. The truth of the text has a cognitive, ethical/relational, and aesthetic dimension require consideration to accomplish a recovery of the text and its truth for the self and world.
