Description
  • Lithograph of James Manning. 1881. James Manning was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, on October 22, 1738. He graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1762 and married Margaret Sites a year later. He was entrusted by the Philadelphia Association to establish a college in Rhode Island. After obtaining the charter of the College of Rhode Island, Manning moved to Warren, where he started a grammar school. In 1764 a church was formed at Warren and they called Manning as its first pastor. The next year he became the first president of the College of Rhode Island (now Brown University), which opened in 1766. Manning was active in the Warren Association from its inception in 1767. In 1770 he resigned the pastorate of the Warren church; he accepted the pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Providence the next year. Manning retired from his pastorate in 1791 and died on July 29 of that year. JPG file (367 KB)
