Lithograph of Joseph W. D. Creath. 1881. On February 3, 1809, Joseph W. D. Creath was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He was educated at Virginia Baptist Seminary (which later became Richmond College), where he graduated in 1837. Creath pastored several area churches until he was appointed as missionary to Texas by the Domestic Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1846. He worked to raise money for missions and the building of churches, as well as starting new churches in the Southwest. While in Texas, Creath served as moderator of the Union Association, president of the State Convention, president of the trustees of Baylor University, and vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
