Description
  • Portrait of Aaron Leland. 1913. Aaron Leland was born in Holliston, Massachusetts on May 28, 1761. He became a member of a Baptist church in 1785 and was licensed to preach. In 1789 he moved to Chester, Vermont, to pastor a new church formed there. Leland served as representative in the General Assembly for 9 years, speaker of the House for 3 years, lieutenant-governor of the state for 5 years, and assistant justice of the County Court for 18 years. He declined candidacy for governor in 1828 because he felt it would take away from his ministry. In 1814 Leland received an honorary M.A. degree from Middlebury College; the following year he was also awarded one from Brown University. He died on August 25, 1833.
