Description
  • Following the death of Louis Kahn in 1974, Joseph Esherick and his firm Esherick, Hamsey, Doge and Davis and Richard Peters and firm Peters, Clayberg and Caulfield took over the project. Peters notes that they completed the library in the spirit of Kahn but that there is no evidence that Kahn would have completed the building as it is now or as he originally conceived it. Kahn often reworked his plans. The project was completed in two phases: Phase 1, basement and first floor, July 1979 to February 1981; Phase 2, second and third floor, July 1985 to April 1987. The library was named the Flora Lamson Hewlett Library on May 5, 1987.
