Description
  • The writer discusses daily life. Among the more interesting lines: "The people are not more than half civilized down here. They are always killing each other, and such like. During Christmas nearly every man in town was drunk." The writer goes on to discuss an encounter in Knoxville, TN with a widower "summer before last, I spent my vacation with my Uncle in Knoxville, and while I was there, there was a widower [who] fell in love with me, and ever since he has been bothering me with love letters. I wish you could read some of them. They are so sickening, that they make me sick at my stomach. I think nothing is more detestable than a love letter. You must never write your sweetheart a love letter."
