- In the letter Mark H. Pettway writes to his wife Marina C. Pettway about his travels along the Alabama River near Wilcox County. Pettway describes the land and its people, writing "on comeing down the Alabama River there is apparently a great deal of cotton and wealth in this country - though the people complain of very hard times and the great scarcity of money..." Pettway eventually moved to Wilcox County.
