Description
  • Genesis 1:26 is the first reference to mankind in Scripture, setting forth God's purpose for our creation. Contained within the verse is the basis of all human ethics and Christian theology. God is our creator, a fundamental fact of human existence and the surrounding environment. Psalm 33:6; 148:5 meditate on the role of God as creator of the world and of man. Fundamental to the entire Bible is God's role as creator. Jeremiah 10:11 characterises the true God as creator in contrast to false idols. Knox challenges listeners if they consider God as creator. In Acts 4:24, the Apostles addressed God as their creator. Jesus likewise in Matthew 11 addressed God as Lord over all of creation. When Paul addressed the Gentiles in Acts 17:24 and 14:15, he identified God as creator. God's role as creator is ignored by many people. We must firmly hold to the doctrine and proclaim it fearlessly. From this doctrine of creation flows praise. Humanity does not respond to God with honour and respect. We fail to give thanks to our Creator who is the source of all goodness. From Genesis 1:26 we likewise learn that God is sovereign over all of creation. God's sovereignty draws us to pray confidently. The sovereignty of God exceeds our perceptions of it. For the Lord, nothing is too hard nor impossible. God is able to call the hardest of hearts back to Him. The sovereignty of God should shape our views of ministry, prayer, and our outlook of life. The basis of ministry should be on perseverant prayer and a focus on preaching the truth. Finally, the verse reveals that God is in personal relationship within Himself. Man is likewise a relational being, requiring relationships with others and with God. To be in a personal relationship requires communication between both parties.
