Description
  • Dumbrell speaks on the topic of salt and light from Matthew 5:13-16. Based on the structure of the chapter, the passage presents a summary of verses 5-12 and sets up the movement of the chapter towards a statement on the law contained in verse 17. For the contemporary listener to Jesus, the imagery itself spoke clearly concerning its meaning and application. Parallels between the two images of salt and light are synthetical, representing a developed thought; you must first become salt before you can become light. Jesus teaches that discipleship involves interaction with the world and its inhabitants. Jesus does not advocate a theology of retreat from the world. The passage likewise teaches a certain degree of separation between the followers of God and the world. Our ministry is directed to the world, yet we are warned not to identify or be influenced by it.
