Taken from a sermon by Martin Luther on the suffering of Christ, this woodcut shows Jesus on the cross with his tomb before him and (perhaps) the Apostle John (or another disciple) kneeling in prayer or worship before him. In the lower right corner is the monogram of Hans Schäufelein (which incorporates the “H” and “S” of his name and has a small shovel [Schaufel] nearby), a German artist who worked in Albrecht Dürer’s shop and possibly that of Hans Holbein, before moving on to Nördlingen, where he spent the rest of his career
