Description
  • Christopher Shoomaker, an elderly bearded man, stands chained to the stake, fully clothed and with hands clasped and his face turned upward. His lips appear to be open and he may be speaking, perhaps to the soldier in front of him who is gesturing with his hand. He is surrounded by a crowd of civilians and soldiers. In earlier editions this martyrdom is illustrated by Luborsky and Ingram 11223/18 and appears only in the second (1570) and third early English editions (1576) to depict the burning of Christopher Shoomaker. This engraving, however, is an entirely new design based on Luborsky and Ingram 11223/19 and 11223/39 but is different from the design of "The burning of Babram." JPEG file (446 KB).
