The Confederate Monument at the north side of Alabama's historic Capitol was erected in 1899 in memory of the Confederate dead. Jefferson Davis, First President of the Confederacy who took his oath of office on the portico of the State Capitol at Montgomery, laid the cornerstone at ceremonies held April 26, 1889.
