  • Photograph of John Benjamin Lawrence. 1917. On July 10, 1875, John Benjamin Lawrence was born in Rankin County, Mississippi. He was converted at the age of thirteen and ordained ten years later. While he was at Mississippi College he pastored many country churches. Lawrence received his BA degree in 1899, married Helen Alford in 1900, and received his MA degree in 1901. Following graduation he pastored the church at Greenwood before moving to Tennessee, where he pastored the Brownsville Church and the Humboldt Church. Then he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he was a pastor, the Corresponding Secretary for the State Convention Board of Louisiana, and the editor of the Baptist Chronicle. In 1912 Lawrence moved back to Mississippi to pastor the First Church of Columbus. While there he was elected Corresponding Secretary of the Baptist State Convention Board of Mississippi.
