Naomi’s story in chapter 1 is one of travel and return. Within the Bible, numerous stories feature this theme, Abraham to Egypt, Jacob to Harran, Israel to Babylon, and the Prodigal Son’s journey. For Naomi, she is far away from the people and blessings of God. Naomi is left bereft of a family, future, and hope. As she returns, Naomi holds a limited perspective of the grace of God and is consequently sick of heart, bitter, and empty as she returns. Unlike her initial expectations, God responds to the situation of Naomi and Ruth with abundant overflowing blessings and grace. Ruth pushes her way into the Kingdom of God, sharing in Naomi’s blessings. Despite her initial feelings, Naomi returns with a simple confession and a recognition of God’s role in her return. For us today, to be away from God means to be in opposition to God. Webb urges listeners to return like Naomi to the Lord.
