Description
  • Wearing a hat illustrated with devils, Hus stands chained against a stone building. Faggots surround him. A worker lights the bundles at Hus's feet, and soldiers and a priest sit nearby on horseback. One soldier sarcastically offers Hus the safe-conduct paper that he had been promised by Sigismund, the Holy Roman Emperor, who did not prevent his execution at the Council of Constance, in 1415. This woodcut appears in the first through fourth editions (1563, 1570, 1576, and 1583). Luborsky and Ingram 11222/8, 11223/10. JPEG file (1.01 MB).
