  • Photograph of John Roach Straton. 1923. On April 6, 1875, John Roach Straton was born in Evansville, Indiana. He was converted in 1892. In 1898 he graduated from Mercer University. He was ordained in 1900, the same year he entered Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1903 Straton became Professor of Oratory and Interpretation of Literature at Mercer University. He served on the faculty of Baylor University from 1903-1905. At that time he became pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Chicago. After three years he accepted the pastorate of the Seventh Immanuel Church of Baltimore. In 1913 he resigned this position to accept the pastorate of the First Church of Norfolk, Virginia. This position he held until 1918, when he became pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of New York City. He died 1929. JPG file (187 KB)
