Description
  • Peterson preaches on the prayer of Jesus for the Disciples. As models of future believers, the prayer of Jesus for the Twelve forms an ongoing petition for all believers. Jesus kept the Disciples from perishing through apostasy. It is the Spirit who keeps the Disciples in relationship with the Father and from apostasy. The Day of Pentecost, and every occasion when the Spirit is given to new believers, forms an answer to this petition. A central petition in the prayer involves the unity of believers. The unity of the Trinity is reflected in the community of God's people, expressed through the Spirit. Christians should show greater care in the expression of unity within the Christian church. Jesus prays for spiritual protection against the world and its ruler. The petition involves both perseverance and the experience of fullness of joy. The secret of this joy is having and holding onto the word of Jesus. The means by which we are separated from the world and kept in relationship with Jesus is the gospel. Jesus prays for a separation, in heart and mind, of believers from the world. Finally, Jesus prays for consecration to the Father through the Word of God; believers are consecrated by and into the Word. In this petition, Jesus asks the Father to accomplish this consecrating work in believers.
