William Hale [Haile] stands fully clothed and chained to the stake. He cries, "Beware of this Idolater," and points at Bishop Edmund Bonner [“Bonner”] in the crowd. Bonner stands with his hand over his chest and has an alarmed expression on his face. Another soldier is turned away from Hale and looks directly at Bonner. Several other soldiers gather behind Hale and Bonner while many faceless soldiers appear in the background. In earlier editions this martyrdom is illustrated by Luborsky and Ingram 11223/16, which appears in each of the second (1570), third (1576), and fourth (1583) early English editions. This, however, is a completely new design. JPEG file (502 KB).
