Lithograph of Hanserd Knollys. 1881. Hanserd Knollys was born in Chalkwell, Lincolnshire, in 1598. He was a graduate of the University of Cambridge. In 1629 he was ordained and charged with the parish of Humberstone. There he preached three to four sermons a week for over 40 years. In 1636, he resigned from ministry and membership in the Anglican church. Knollys fled from the resulting persecution to America, arriving in Boston in 1638. Soon after his arrival, he moved to Dover, New Hampshire, and began to preach. Persecution moved Knollys’ Baptists to Long Island and then New Jersey. Knollys was summoned to England by his elderly father, and he commenced preaching upon arrival. In 1645 he was ordained pastor of the Baptist church in London. Due to the numerous laws against the worship of dissenting groups, Knollys was frequently in prison. He was Calvinist in doctrine; and he authored eleven works before his death on September 19, 1691, including a grammar of the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew languages. JPG file (341 KB)
