Lithograph of Augustus Rauschenbusch. 1881. On February 13, 1816, Augustus Rauschenbusch was born in Altena, Westphalia, Germany. At the age of 15 he entered the gymnasium at Elberfeld, from which he graduated at 19 and entered the University of Berlin. At 20 he became a believer. When Rauschenbusch’s father, a Lutheran minister, died in 1841, his congregation called on Augustus Rauschenbusch to be his successor. In 1846 he immigrated to America to minister to German Americans. He was baptized into the Baptist faith in 1850. The next year he preached throughout parts of Canada, starting some of the first Baptist churches there. Rauschenbusch settled in Missouri in 1854. The next year he organized the German Baptist Church in Gasconade County, Missouri, in which he preached. In 1858 he took charge of the German department at the Theological Seminary at Rochester, New York. JPG file (360 KB)
