Description
  • Lawton preaches on God's election based on Jeremiah 1:1-5. The book is set against the backdrop of the rise and fall of empires. When Jeremiah's prophetic ministry is placed in its chronological context, the prophet was active around the time of king Josiah's reign. Josiah's reforms set forth a purposeful programme of reclamation against idolatry. Despite its apparent success, Jeremiah does not dwell upon such efforts. Instead, Jeremiah identifies a deeper problem afflicting the heart of Israel. Upon Jeremiah's initial calling, the prophet understands his weakness. Timothy, like Jeremiah was involved in ministry while young. Paul challenges Timothy to not consider his youthfulness as he carried out his responsibilities. Jeremiah discovered his own identity through the discovery of the meaning and purpose of God for his own life. For God's children, we are His no matter what occurs in the world. Like Jeremiah, we must be reminded that God has called us to be His before the creation of the world. We begin to be God's sheep before we are aware that He is our Shepherd.
