Sermon given at St John's Sutherland. Lawton preaches on the topic of prayer from Mark 11. As noted by Lawton, Jesus' declaration of the power of prayer to move mountains finds pointed significance when one realises Jesus was most likely referring to Mount of Olives, a geographic location central to the identity and history of Israel. In addition to this statement, Jesus' cursing of the fig tree for lack of fruit finds greater importance when one realises that the fig tree was commonly used as a symbol for Israel. When our universe collapses and we lose everything that we trust in, we are encouraged to hold onto the faithfulness of God through prayer. The greatest thing God can do within us is to forgive and change us. The real prayer that changes the world is when we (from our hearts) forgive others in response to God's forgiveness of us.
