  • Photograph of Bernard Washington Spilman. 1923. On January 22, 1871, Bernard Washington Spilman was born in Weldon, North Carolina. He was baptized in 1883, licensed to preach in 1887, and ordained in 1891. He graduated form Wake Forest College in 1891. After entering Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1892, he stayed only two years and did not graduate. In 1895 he accepted the pastorate at Kingston, North Carolina. After a year he became the Sunday School Secretary for the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. In 1901 he became Field Secretary for the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Six years later he became the General Manager of the Southern Baptist Assembly. He became the Director of Religious Education for the Assembly in 1920. Spilman received the degree of Doctor of Divinity three times: from John B. Stetson University of Florida in 1911, from Baylor University of Texas in 1920, and from Wake Forest College in 1921. He also served as president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina for six terms. He died May 20, 1950. JPG file (213 KB)
